I heard someone say, “Old road, old dogs, old folks, and old ways still have a lot to offer in this sped-up world we live in.” I kind of relate being in my 60th year. Funny thing is though, I’m fitter now with way more energy than when I started in real estate in 1994 in my early thirties and I’m as tech-savvy as any 20-year-old, haha.

Yes, a lot has changed since those days of doing deals and signing paper contracts across the bonnet of my old 240GL Volvo. 1,000 or so property sales later, I’ve seen many agents come and go, many things have changed but there’s one constant that hasn’t when it comes to selling real estate and that’s market knowledge, marketing expertise, selling expertise and personal service. These things still count the most if you want to maximise your sales price.

I’m a little different from your local agent. Because I get to appraise property all over Brisbane, north, south, east and west and mostly inner-city it’s given me a better appreciation of what buyers are willing to pay. And I think it’s fair to say that I tend to receive proportionally a higher number of interstate and overseas buyer enquiries compared to most local agents. The southern buyers are pushing prices up right now. I’ve literally sold in every suburb of Brisbane (including outside of Brisbane like the Mexican style mansion on the Isle of Capri I sold this year) over the past 30 years which gives my sellers an advantage due to my expanded property market knowledge.

So . . . here are 5 maybe not-so-known facts about me and why I love selling real estate!

  1. When you’re selling your home, you’d hope your agent knows how to sell, and better still lives and breathes selling virtually 24/7. If there was one thing I can claim, it would be I’ve been in sales most of my life. When I was 7 years old, I got an idea in my head to sell one-metre-square parcels of land on the vacant block next door to other kids in the street. That summer “selling land” I made enough money to buy a couple of extra Ekka Sample Bags. And that’s when I got hooked on selling.
  2. You name it I’ve sold it. Wool, pigs, cars, insurance, furniture, bagels, art and of course property, lots and lots of property. I started selling land as a kid and fell in love with the psychology of selling and property. I’ve been very fortunate to have sold the best of the best and the worst of the worst. It doesn’t matter to me I just love selling property.
  3. My career highlight so far was selling the penthouse apartment at 130 Sydney St, New Farm for $5,750,000. It was a stunning architectural apartment with no river views making it the highest price for a non-riverfront apartment in Brisbane at the time. That record still stands I believe.
  4. I love selling owner-occupier apartments. There’s something extremely satisfying to me when both the seller and the buyer get what they want due to my ability to negotiate. Karen and I live in a roof top apartment which we adore. Most agents prefer selling houses, I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because selling houses is easier for them as there’s no body corporate to navigate with a house sale?? Or maybe it’s because they think houses are more prestigious. I don’t know. All I know is I love selling beautiful apartments. That’s my thing.
  5. When I’m not selling, I’m either at home gardening, I have lots of pots or BBQing on my Weber smoker (Wagyu rump cap ‘picanha’ style roast is my specialty), or I’m at the beach with Karen and Vincent (our Cocker Spaniel) or I’m out and about walking for fun and exercise. Oh and coffee, I love coffee, you might find me at Piccolo By Her in Fortitude Valley in the morning most days.

What I’m hoping is, by sharing my love for selling real estate, especially apartments – which I hope I’ll never need to retire from doing (could I go through to my mid-seventies?
